A WordPress theme controls a site's overall visual design and layout — colours, typography, page structure, and general styling — without directly affecting the actual content stored underneath it. Switching themes can transform a site's entire appearance while leaving its content fully intact.

  • Overall visual design — colours, fonts, and general spacing
  • Layout structure — how a header, main content, and footer are arranged
  • Template files — how different content types are actually displayed
  • Free themes — available directly through the official WordPress.org repository
  • Premium themes — purchased from marketplaces like ThemeForest, typically offering more features and dedicated support
  • Confirm active, recent development and consistent updates
  • Check genuine compatibility with essential plugins, particularly WooCommerce
  • Test the theme's actual page load speed before committing to it
  • Confirm it's genuinely responsive across mobile and tablet devices

Direct code changes should always go through a proper child theme, ensuring those specific customizations survive future theme updates rather than being silently overwritten the next time the parent theme is updated.
