Natural Language Understanding, or NLU, is a subset of NLP focused specifically on interpreting meaning and intent from human language, rather than generating it. Where NLP is the broader field covering both understanding and generating language, NLU deals specifically with the comprehension side of that equation.

  • NLP — the full field, covering both understanding and generating language
  • NLU — the specific subset focused purely on interpreting meaning and intent
  • Determine the underlying intent behind a search query or spoken request
  • Extract specific, meaningful entities from text — names, dates, locations
  • Recognise sentiment and emotional tone within a piece of writing
  • Resolve genuine ambiguity in language, using surrounding context
  • Voice assistants figuring out exactly what a spoken command is actually asking for
  • Search engines interpreting the real, underlying intent behind a typed query
  • Customer service chatbots correctly routing a request to the right resource

For website owners, NLU is a key reason why search engines increasingly reward content that genuinely, thoroughly answers a real question, rather than content simply built around matching exact keyword phrases.
