Malware — short for malicious software — is any software specifically designed to damage, disrupt, or gain unauthorized access to a computer system. For a website, malware infections can mean stolen data, redirected traffic, defaced pages, or a site being quietly used to attack visitors.

  • Backdoors — hidden access points letting an attacker return even after being discovered
  • SEO spam — injecting hidden links or content to manipulate search rankings
  • Malicious redirects — silently sending visitors to a completely different, harmful site
  • Defacement — visibly altering a site's content, sometimes to display a clear attack message
  • Outdated WordPress core, theme, or plugin software with known vulnerabilities
  • Weak, easily guessed admin passwords
  • Plugins or themes downloaded from untrustworthy, non-official sources
  • Compromised or poorly secured hosting environments
  • Keep WordPress core, themes, and plugins consistently updated
  • Use strong, unique passwords, along with two-factor authentication
  • Install a reputable security plugin — Wordfence or Sucuri are common choices
  • Maintain regular, reliable backups in case recovery is ever needed
