Linux is a free, open-source operating system that powers the overwhelming majority of the world's web servers — including most WordPress hosting. Unlike Windows or macOS, Linux is developed collaboratively by a global community and comes in many different distributions, each suited to slightly different needs.

  • Free to use, with no licensing costs for hosting providers to pass along
  • Highly stable, capable of running for very long stretches without needing a restart
  • Strong built-in security, thanks to constant scrutiny from its open-source community
  • Fully compatible with the standard LAMP stack that WordPress runs on
  • Ubuntu — a popular, well-supported, and beginner-friendly choice
  • CentOS — long favoured for enterprise-grade server environments
  • Debian — known for exceptional stability and reliability

Not really — the vast majority of WordPress site owners never interact with the underlying Linux server directly, since hosting providers and cPanel-style dashboards handle that entirely. It becomes genuinely useful only for advanced server management or serious custom troubleshooting.
