A plugin is a piece of software that adds specific new functionality to WordPress, without requiring any changes to WordPress's own core files. The plugin ecosystem — currently numbering well over 60,000 free options in the official WordPress repository alone — is one of the platform's single greatest strengths.

  • SEO — Yoast SEO and Rank Math, among others
  • Security — Wordfence and Sucuri
  • Performance — WP Rocket and W3 Total Cache
  • eCommerceWooCommerce
  • Page building — Elementor and Divi
  • Forms — WPForms and Gravity Forms
  • Through the WordPress dashboard's built-in plugin search, for anything in the official repository
  • By manually uploading a plugin's zip file, for premium plugins purchased outside the repository
  • Via FTP, in less common cases where the dashboard upload method isn't available
  • Check when a plugin was last actively updated
  • Read through genuine user reviews and ratings
  • Confirm active compatibility with your specific WordPress version
  • Avoid installing more plugins than a site genuinely needs — each one adds some potential performance and security overhead
